2005 AGM GUEST SPEAKER
Tony Christiansen, a personal friend of 2004/05 President Alan Coates, spoke for 20 minutes between the AGM and the meal. Having lost both legs as the result of a train accident at age 9, Tony went on to prove that he was not a "cripple", obtaining his Surf Bronze, working as a signwriter, became involved in car racing, and conducting motivational sessions, along with a great many other activities that most of us never manage to do. He made history at our meeting, bringing the room to complete silence for longer than any of our chairmen have ever managed to do at an AGM. If you ever get the opportunity to see one of his presentations, do it. When he saw that he could not be seen sitting is his wheelchair he lifted himself up onto the table and carried on the session, with a great mix of serious and humerous stories about himself and the way people react to his "Disability". As a surf lifesaver, he gave his time to us as a gesture of the way he feels about the movement |
