The recent New Zealand Community Trust NZ Surf Life Saving Championships on Midway Beach in Gisborne were severely interrupted by adverse weather and un-managable surf conditions.
Many events were delayed or moved to alternative beaches, with the Masters on the Thursday (first day) being wholly re-located to a beach 5 Km to the west of Midway. A return was made to Waikanae Clubhouse for the Presentations and a wind-down BBQ.
The subsequent days were similarly disrupted, with Friday's water events events being moved to the same beach as the Masters, with the Beach Events being conducted in the "Sand Pit" accross the road from the Midway Clubhouse.
Saturday's events were moved to Waikanae Beach, with all of Sunday's events, although often considerably delayed, all being conducted at Midway. The end of the day (Sunday) saw almost all of the Presentations of Medallions & Trophies being held at the conclusion of the last event, with the Presentations being completed, in the dark, at 8.40pm with the assistance of torch-light and vehicle headlights.
